ASEAN Leaders’ Statement on the 55th Anniversary of ASEAN

WE, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), namely Brunei Darussalam, Kingdom of Cambodia, the Republic of Indonesia, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, the Republic of the Philippines, the Republic of Singapore, the Kingdom of Thailand, and the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, gathered in Phnom Penh, Kingdom of Cambodia, on the occasion of the 55th Anniversary of ASEAN;
 

RECALLING the establishment of ASEAN by its five founding Member States in 1967, where the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration) stressed aspiration of shared responsibility for promoting peace, prosperity and stability in the region through abiding respect for justice and the rule of law and adherence to the principles of the Charter of the United Nations (the UN Charter), the successful expansion to ten Member States in 1999, and the entry into force of the ASEAN Charter in December 2008;
